Deck Refinishing under 700 square feet:
$1,500-$2,000   Depending on size and condition. This Price does not apply to Urethane finishes, or if sanding or repairs are needed.

Refinishing Data

  • Most sealers break down under the UV light after a few years and are easily water-blasted off. Shady areas that haven't broken down may need to be stripped, which may darken the wood, as it is alkaline and thus the acid wash is applied to brighten it back up.
  • After the washing stage, the deck needs a good day or so of drying before the sealer is applied.
  • On Ipe' (Brazilian Ironwood) decks, sometimes sanding is required to keep it looking it's best, as the wood can get very dark and needs sanding to lighten it up and to smooth out the boards, as they sometimes cup (warp up) on the ends. A rotary floor sander can be rented to smooth them out.
  • The deck sealer which we most recommend for a natural wood look and especially for hardwoods is Cabot products. We also like Behr products, which have a long life.
  • If boards are replaced, a solid stain sealer instead of a semi-transparent sealer should be used so that the board's newness is not apparent.
  • We don't recommend the use of urethane sealers in areas that get sunlight, as the cost to maintain or remove them is exorbitant.
